The holidays are a magical time. But if you're parenting an infant, they can also be exhausting. Between travel, visitors, late nights, and overstimulation, even the best sleeper can get thrown off. Give the gift of sleep this holiday season and reserve your spot today!

As a pediatric sleep coach, I help families navigate sleep challenges year-round. However, the holiday season brings its own special chaos. The good news? You don’t have to choose between special memories and good sleep.

Here are some tips to protect your baby’s rest while still enjoying the season:

🎁 Why Baby Sleep Gets Off Track During the Holidays

Even if you’ve worked hard to establish a sleep routine, the holidays can throw a wrench in things. Some common challenges include:

  • Traveling across time zones

  • Late-night family gatherings

  • Disrupted nap schedules

  • Sleeping in a new environment (shared hotel or guest room)

  • Overstimulation from new faces, lights, noise, and activity

Sleep disruptions are normal. But you can plan for them and recover quickly.

✈️ Holiday Baby Sleep Tip 1: Prioritize One Core Nap a Day

During busy days, you may not be able to stick to your full nap schedule—and that’s okay. Focus on protecting one solid nap (usually the first one) in a quiet, dark space. Even 45 minutes of high-quality sleep can make the rest of the day go more smoothly. Use rescue naps (car or stroller) if baby protests through nap time.

🕯️ Holiday Baby Sleep Tip 2: Stick to the Routine (Even If the Time Shifts)

Routines are anchoring. Even if bedtime is a little later than usual, do the familiar steps—bath, book, feeding, song, etc.—to signal to your baby that sleep is coming. Pay attention to total time awake between sleep sessions. Be aware that over-tiredness can lead to increased crying.

🧳 Holiday Baby Sleep Tip 3: Make the Sleep Space Feel Familiar

Bring familiar sleep cues from home:

  • Brown noise machine

  • Favorite sleep sack

  • A crib sheet that smells like home

This helps your baby feel safe and relaxed, even in a hotel or guest room.

🎉 Holiday Baby Sleep Tip 4: Don’t Stress About One Off Night

One skipped nap or late bedtime won’t undo all your progress. What matters is the overall pattern. If things go sideways one day, just aim to get back on track the next. Sleep is flexible, and babies bounce back faster than we think. Expect behavioral effects of schedule deviations to remedy themselves within 48-72 hours.

🕰️ Bonus Tip: Adjust for Time Zones Gradually

If you’re traveling across time zones, shift your baby’s sleep schedule by 15–30 minutes per day leading up to the trip, if possible. Once you arrive, anchor your baby’s day with light exposure and feeding around the new time zone. Need help adjusting your schedule? I can create a travel sleep plan just for your baby.

🌟 Embrace the Joy of the Holidays

The holidays can be a whirlwind. But they can also be a time of connection and joy. Embrace the moments that matter. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help. You are not alone in this journey.

💤 The Importance of Sleep for Your Baby

Sleep is crucial for your baby’s development. It helps them grow, learn, and thrive. When your little one sleeps well, you can enjoy more peaceful moments together. Prioritizing sleep during the holidays can set the tone for a happy new year.

🎈 Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment

Wherever you are, try to create a sleep-friendly environment. Dim the lights, reduce noise, and keep the room at a comfortable temperature. These small adjustments can make a big difference in how well your baby sleeps.

🌙 Consistency is Key

While the holidays may disrupt your routine, consistency is still essential. Try to maintain your baby’s bedtime rituals as much as possible. This will help signal to them that it’s time to wind down, even in a busy environment.

📅 Plan for Recovery

If your baby has had a rough night or day, plan for recovery. Allow for extra quiet time or naps the following day. This will help them bounce back and feel more rested.

🎁 The Gift of Sleep

This holiday season, give yourself and your baby the gift of sleep. It’s one of the best presents you can offer. By following these tips, you can create a more restful environment for your family.
